These three tobacco tags were recovered during the 2016 Kansas Archeology Training Program at the Last Chance Store in Council Grove. Tobacco tags began as a way to brand or advertise a particular company's tobacco and were attached to twists of tobacco. They were first used in Cuba in the 1860s and were made in the United States into the 1920s. These three tags are very plain, but some were highly decorated. By the 1870s people were begin to collect and trade these interesting items. The Last Chance Store was added to the National Register Historic Places in 1971.
