Universal Spelling Board. Instructional spelling toy with 56 circular letter tiles that slide on a slotted track. February 16, 1886 patent date. The spelling board was designed by Alonzo F. Smith (1850-?), a Milwaukee carpenter and patternmaker. The year after securing his patent, Smith founded the Instructive Toy Company in Milwaukee to manufacture the board and other educational toys of his design. At some point the company granted Selchow & Righter of New York the exclusive rights to market and sell the board, which they did until 1923.
