Poster promoting a Mexican Independence Day celebration in Topeka, Kansas. The rectangular-shaped poster is printed on white paper. Mexican immigrants to the United States formed mutualistas - mutual aid societies - in the 19th and 20th centuries. The organizations provided a connection to the immigrants' homeland and helped them survive in a new country. They provided cultural actives, education, legal protection, and advocacy, usually for men, though some mutualistas had women's auxiliaries. The Sociedad Miguel Hidalgo, named for the leader of the revolutionaries in the Mexican War of Independence, was organized in Topeka, Kansas, possibly in 1917. The group sponsored activities like the celebration of Mexican Independence Day promoted on this poster.
