This is a photograph of Judge Arthur Jehu Stanley, Jr. (1901-2001) taken about the time he served as president of the Kansas State Historical Society.

Arthur Jehu Stanley, Jr. was born in Lincoln, Kansas and attended high school in Kansas City, Kansas where his father was an attorney. At age 17, Arthur Stanley, Jr. enlisted in the U. S. Army. As a member of the 7th Cavalry, Stanley participated in the Mexican Expedition in pursuit of Pancho Villa. Stanley returned home in 1919, completed high school, and enrolled in law school at the Kansas City School of Law. Just one year into law school, he joined the Navy, where he was assigned to the U.S.S. Pidgeon. By 1928 he had completed his service, was admitted to the Missouri Bar, and joined his father's legal practice.

In 1940, Stanley was elected to the Kansas State Senate as the representative for District 4, Wyandotte County. Soon afterward he was called to active duty as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army. His service in World War II took him to England where he participated in the planning and preparation for the Normandy invasion, and to France where he served until November 1944 with the Ninth Fighter Command. Afterward, he returned to Kansas City to resume private practice with his father.

On June 25, 1958, Stanley was nominated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to the United States District Court for the District of Kansas. Stanley was confirmed by the United States Senate on July 3 and commissioned on July 7. He served as chief judge from 1961 to 1971, assuming senior status on April 1, 1971. Stanley served in that capacity until his death in Leavenworth, Kansas on January 27, 2001.
