This photo, which is undated, is of Hughes' son, Bill (born 1918). It was taken prior to his departure for the New Mexico Military Institute, Roswell, NM. NMMI is known as the "West Point" of the West. It provides high school diplomas and Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees. The Institute's Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) had begun in 1916. Bill was preparing to continue the Hughes family military history beginning with Colonel James White Frierson, continuing to Bill's father (Major James C. Hughes), and Bill's older brother, James Renwick Hughes. James Clark Hughes was born in Topeka, Kansas, in 1888, and served in the Mexican Border Conflict, World War I, and World War II. He used an autographic camera to take pictures of friends, family, and places in the United States and Europe during World War I.
