By 1932, the Hughes family had moved to Long Beach, California. Captain Hughes was assigned ROTC Duty at Long Beach Poly High School. This photo of Hughes' wife, Mabel, and daughters Betty and Peggy was taken in Long Beach in September of 1936. This photo was taken after Hughes had been promoted to a Major (August 1, 1935). He was assigned to Long Beach Poly High School until August 1937. James Clark Hughes was born in Topeka, Kansas, in 1888, and served in the Mexican Border Conflict, World War I, and World War II. He used an autographic camera to take pictures of friends, family, and places in the United States and Europe during World War I and the following years.
