This woman (possibly Mabel Hughes) is standing by an automobile at the gate to Camp Funston, Fort Riley, Kansas. The photo was taken June 10, 1926. Camp Funston had been a training headquarters for troops during World War I. Approximately 50,000 soldiers were trained there before being sent overseas. By 1924 it had been decommissioned and several of the buildings torn down. James Clark Hughes was born in Topeka, Kansas, in 1888, and served in the Mexican Border Conflict, World War I, and World War II. He used an autographic camera to take pictures of friends, family, and places in the United States and Europe during World War I. A full biography of James Clark Hughes is available at the link below to Kansapedia.
