A view of the sod house built on the homestead of Benny Batts, Stanton County, Kansas. On June 17, 1965, the Ulysses News featured the sod house in a story called "The Last Soddie?" According to the article, the house was located three miles north of Johnson City and was built in 1921 or 1922 by Benny Batts, who homesteaded the land about 1907, and William Walker. Buried on a knoll southeast of the "soddie" are James and Lucille Woody, early residents of the area.
