This rim and handle sherd was recovered from the Fanning Site, 14DP1, in Doniphan County and donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 1971. The shell tempered rim sherd is similar to Allamakee Trailed ceramics from the Middle (Developmental) Horizon of the Oneota during the Middle Ceramic Period. The handle is attached directly to the lip and is shaped in a buttress style and decorated with rows of punctates. There are punctates on the lip of the sherd and opposed diagonals on the body. The Fanning site was a village site, associated with the Oneota and Kansa peoples. It was described at the turn of the 19th- and 20th-century as having numerous "teepee sites" still visible.
