Topekan Ken Berry of the Chicago White Sox is shown in this photograph from the 1960s. Berry's major league career spanned 14 seasons, during which he played in 1,383 games for four teams, including the White Sox (1962-1970), California Angels (1971-73), Milwaukee Brewers (1974), and Cleveland Indians (1975). The hallmark of Berry's career was his exceptional defensive skill in the outfield, where he played primarily as a center fielder. In Chicago, he earned the nickname "The Bandit" because of his adeptness in making difficult plays. He was especially known for making spectacular catches at the wall, which robbed many hitters of a home run. Berry received two Gold Gloves in recognition of his excellent fielding, the first in 1970 as a member of the White Sox, and the second in 1972 as a member of the Angels. His career fielding percentage was .989, and he was the American League leader in fielding percentage for outfielders in 1969, 1972, and 1973. Offensively, Berry hit for a career average of .255, with his best year being 1972 when he batted .289. Following his major league career, Berry was the field manager for eight minor league teams; he also worked in several organizations as a minor league instructor and coach. Berry graduated from Washburn Rural High School in 1959 and attended Wichita State University. Digital reproduction of the photo was accomplished through a joint project sponsored by the Kansas Historical Society and the Shawnee County Baseball Hall of Fame.
