The Swan Burk family of McPherson County, Kansas, is shown in this cabinet card from the late 1880s. Swan and his wife Maria, who also went by Mary, are seated in the middle. Between them is a picture of their son Walter, who died at age 4. In the front are their children Carl Martin (standing), Ida, and Henry. Standing in the back are Emma and Tillie Burk, Swan's daughters by an earlier marriage. Swan Burk emigrated from Sweden to the U.S. in 1865, and homesteaded in the New Gottland area of McPherson County in the spring of 1871. He and his brother Gust were among the earliest settlers in that part of the county.
