In her colorful memoir, Maude Elliott recalls Finney County in 1917 and 1918. A University of Kansas alumna, Maude worked as a teacher to support her younger siblings' college education. She endured blizzards and rattlesnakes on her route from her claim shack home to the schoolhouse, which was once a chuck wagon. Maude reminisces about a wagon accident caused by a Model T and a family of eleven who shared a dugout with their dogs and chickens.
