This photograph shows a crane lowering a hood onto a 904340 class car. The car was designed and built to ship and protect aircraft wings. The top cover could be separated from the lower section of the carbody. The hoods came off in two pieces creating a gondola which could be loaded from above. Access doors were added to the ends of the cars allowing entry into the car without having to remove the hoods. This allowed workers to anchor the wing sections after they had been loaded and remove the anchoring mechanisms prior to the unloading of the car. The hoods and body were fabricated out of steel plate and structural shapes. The body was painted in a Lockheed paint scheme.
