This snapshot from 1946 or 1947 features two Topeka High School baseball players. On the left is Howard 'Mace' Pool and on the right, Woody Bulkley. In 1946, the Trojans finished second in the state high school baseball tournament; in 1947, the team won the state title by defeating LaCrosse, 26-0, in the championship game. Howard Pool later played in the minor leagues. Between 1949 and 1952, he participated in 290 games for minor league teams in St. Joseph (MO), Topeka, Iola and Chanute. He also managed the Iola Indians for a partial season in 1951. Digital reproduction of the photograph was accomplished through a joint project sponsored by the Kansas Historical Society and the Shawnee County Baseball Hall of Fame.
