This photograph shows Ted Worthington, a left-handed pitcher with the McAlester Rockets, an affiliate of the New York Yankees in the Class D Sooner State League. At the time, Worthington lived in rural Lecompton. In his youth, he played baseball for youth teams in Lawrence, for Berryton High School (1951-54), and for the Mosby-Mack American Legion team in Topeka (1951-53). During his high school years, he was on three state championship teams, including the 1951 Berryton High team and the 1952 and 1953 Mosby-Mack teams. Following high school, he played Ban Johnson ball in Neodesha (1954) and was signed by Yankee scout Tom Greenwade. During his two seasons as a minor leaguer in McAlester, Oklahoma, he compiled a 5-10 record, with an ERA of 4.92. Following his professional career, he played semi-pro baseball and fast-pitch softball, and was active in Suburban League youth baseball. A long-time resident of Tecumseh, Worthington worked 36 years for Santa Fe Railroad. Digital reproduction of the photograph was accomplished through a joint project sponsored by the Kansas Historical Society and the Shawnee County Baseball Hall of Fame.
