This sepia colored photograph shows a group of men, women, and children standing in front of the Glendale School, District No. 7., in Cheyenne County, Kansas. This sod structure built in 1886 for educational purposes, also served as a place of worship for the community. The use of sod to build homes and schools was common on the Kansas prairie due to the lack of wood and other natural resources.
