Hon. John P. St John

My Dear Sir

Your favor has been recd in which you promise to make Atchison Co a visit in the month of Aug.  If you will do this we propose to get up a great demonstration that shall represent the whole temperance strength  in this county.  Since your enemies rely mainly in their opposition on belittleing you personally I think, and others concur in this, that your best answer will be to show yourself to the people.  In your former visit to this county you won golden opinion not only from friends but from enemies.

I write to request that you will name the day

when we may expect you,   We will need a little time to make necessary preparations.  I have been associated so long with Republicans that crawl on their bellies to the liquor dealers that when I find a man that has always had courage to act the man I want a good opportunity to show my just appreciation.  We propose a picnic that will give opportunity for other speakers; bring them if you will-if not we will furnish them.

We think we can give you at least a part of Atchison Co delegation, but our county Republicans in breaking loose from the old leading strings do greatly need your presence to give them back bone.

Do us the the kindness to tell us promptly when we may expect you.  Truly

Pardee Butler
