Frank Baird to Governor John St. John

Item Description Bookbag Share

Alliance, Ohio  April 20th  1880

Gov. John P. St. John

Topeka Kansas

Dear Sir

Enclosed please find commission for Liberty Jones of Chicago.  To make it stronger and to give its bearer greater influence I forward it to you for your signature.  The accompanying letter from Bro Benham will explain.  I hope it will receive your kind approval.

The Local Option Bill was defeated in our (Ohio) Legislature, but the temperance people are not dismayed or discourged.  We will not abate our efforts one job, and before the end of another year we will demand and have, by the grace of God, something better than local option.

God speed the temperance people of Kansas and crown their efforts with a signal victory next fall.  May your State set the noble example, forming a neucles around which the other western States will grandly cluster - wheeling into line as Prohibition Commonwealth.  Legal evasion to the extent of prohibition and the utter annihilation of the liquor traffic is the only remedy.  Fraternally

Frank Baird

Please have the kindness to return the  enclosed commission to me as soon possible.
