This photograph shows engine hostler Beal of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Company fueling steam locomotive #3437 with fuel oil and water as it prepares to travel through the Illinois Division. From the caption on the back of the photograph: "A large steam locomotive of this type consumes 20,000 to 30,000 gallons of water and 1,200 to 1,900 gallons of heavy fuel oil when handling a heavy train over the Illinois Division for a distance of 235 miles."
