This extensive address book was created by William Allen White, Emporia, Kansas, author and publisher. The hundreds of names are arranged alphabetically, with dividers for each letter of the alphabet. Most of the addresses are typed but there are some handwritten entries, address changes and cross outs. There are a number of addresses for newspaper, magazine, and book editors and publishers in Kansas and across the United States. It also includes addresses for a number of philanthropic organizations at local and national levels. There are a number of entries for state and federal government officials and politicians. Address of friends, family, and local and regional businesses are entered as well. There are some international address as well. Some of the entries include a date, which may reflect the time of the first contact with the person or organization or the date the address was updated. The dates range from approximately 1916 through 1944. It reflects the breadth of White's contacts and his interests and activities. Examples of the people listed include John Stuart Curry; Charles Dawes; Harry Darby; Edna Ferber; Henry Ford; Justice Felix Frankfurter; Ben Hibbs; J. Edgar Hoover; Herbert Hoover; Harold Ickes; Sinclair Lewis; Henry Luce; H. L. Mencken; J. C. Nichols; Albert T. Reid; John D. Rockefeller, Jr.; Gov. Franklin Roosevelt, New York; Dr. Charles Sheldon; Upton Sinclair; Justice Harlan Stone; Ida Tarbell; Oswald Villard; Walter White; and Wendell Willkie. Some of the organizations included are American Red Cross, Committee to Defend American by Aiding the Allies, Finnish Relief Fund, and the League of Nations Non-Partisan Association among numerous others.
