Six photographs of Dr. Lucius Murray Bowen and his wife LeRoy Bowen. Dr. Bowen was born January 31, 1913 in Waverly, Tennessee. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science from University of Tennessee in 1934 and a medical degree from the same university in 1937. Bowen did his internships at Nashville General Hospital in 1937and Bellevue Hospital in New York City in 1938. He had a general practice at Grasslands Hospital in Valhalla, New York in 1941. During World War II, he served as a major in the U. S. Army medical corps. In 1946, Bowen was a resident-fellow in the Menninger Foundation School of Psychiatry. He is well known for the Bowen Family Systems Theory and psychotherapy. Bowen was the first president of the American Family Therapy Association and received many awards throughout his career.
