These fragments of clothing were taken from members of the Dalton Gang who were killed in a shootout in Coffeyville, Kansas, on October 5, 1892. J.J. Rambo, a newspaper editor from nearby Chetopa, Kansas, donated the fragments that year. Sightseers descended on Coffeyville following the shooting, taking pieces of clothing from the infamous gang. Rambo may have done the same while reporting on the events for his newspaper. Photographs of the deceased gang members indicate that the plaid wool fragment came from the pants of Gratton Dalton. The pinstriped wool fragment came from Bob Dalton's pants.
