This black and white photograph shows Miss Kansas Wheat Girl, Vada Watson Hoskinson (1905-2000), promoting the state's number one crop at the Atlantic City boardwalk in New Jersey. In the background, the James' Candy Company sign is somewhat visible. A native of Turon, Kansas, Vada was selected as the state's first wheat girl through a contest sponsored in 1925 by Kansas State University. During her reign she traveled throughout the United States promoting Kansas wheat. In 1928, she graduated from Sterling College and became an elementary school teacher in the Turon area. On January 5, 2000 she passed away at the age of ninety-four.
