The Sterling China Company produced this ceramic plate for the officer's mess at Strother Army Airfield in Kansas. Built in 1942 and located between Arkansas City and Winfield, Kansas, Strother Army Air Field was named after Captain Donald Root Strother, the first Army Air Force pilot from Cowley County killed in World War II. Ruby Winona Boory Diehl donated this plate to the museum in 1967. Mrs Diehl worked as a legislative reporter for the Associated Press and was the first woman to serve in the capital press corps. She lived in Winfield prior to her marriage to Clayton Carr Diehl in 1948.
