Whole-cloth quilt with indigo top made of wool twill fabric that has been calendered or glazed to create sheen. Quilted designs include feather wreaths enclosing shell-shaped medallions. A batting of brown and tan sheep's wool is visible through holes in the top. The backing is coarse off-white wool fabric. Sarah Phelps Hamilton made this quilt in Massachusetts in 1793. It was passed down through succeeding generations and came to Kansas with the family in the mid-1880s. The top fabric probably was imported from Europe, while the batting and backing fabrics likely were from New England.
