This is a photograph of Gertrude Schupbach Hawks, a quilter, who lived near Hiawatha, Kansas. She was born August 22, 1891, and died May 14, 1975. She married Joseph Hawks on April 16, 1913. Gertrude quilted to pass the time after her husband's death in 1947. She did not belong to a quilt guild but often quilted with a friend. Gertrude used fabric scraps leftover from other sewing projects to make her quilts. Only one quilt was made with fabrics purchased from a store in Hiawatha. Several of her quilts are in the Historical Society's collection.
