Cotton quilt made in the Star of Hope or Variable Star pattern. Quilt top incorporates 36 hand-pieced stars, alternating with blocks of navy blue calico. The calico is a Centennial star print, popular around 1876 during the nation's centennial. The stars are cut from various patterned cottons in shades of brown, blue, orange, and red. Brown cotton print backing. Hand quilted. Susan Latta made the quilt for her daughter Luella, born in 1878. The Latta family came to Kansas from Pennsylvania around 1880, settling in Holton where Susan made the quilt.
