Red and green on white appliqué quilt in variation of Rose of Sharon pattern. The quiltmaker was Jane McCurdy Brooks, born in Ohio in 1834. She married Daniel Brooks, the husband of her sister, Rebecca, after the latter died sometime in the 1860s. By 1870 the family had moved to Franklin County, Kansas, where Jane lived out the rest of her life. She made this quilt during the Civil War in Ohio, getting ideas for the quilting designs from things found in nature, including leaves from the woods. Jane tallied 20 days spent in quilting alone.
