Lecompton Dec 21, 1858

Dear General

It seems hard that I cannot get time to write you a good long letter but so it is.  I have been putting it off from time to time and have delayed having so much to write that it does not seem as if I was ever to have the opportunity

But I think I will get it in a day or two all my correspondence is up to the [XXXXX], and Governor Midway is here and I think I shall have more time.

Bery Newsome is here and informs me that the Shawnees intend sending a delegation to Washington and would like to be called to Washington with them –

She wishes to be with them to understand what is done while there – She will detain the delegation at home until he can hear from you – he says they want some important alterations respecting their schools &c which he thinks are not practicable

What would be the propriety of his loaning any portion of the funds in his hands providing he can do so safely – he has the money locked up in the safe at Westport and would it not be quite a safe loaned into good hands who would pay it upon call – There is some money wanted at Lecompton for 5 or 6 months to help out some of the improvements here and if he knew that it would be proper and that the money would not be called for under [that] time he might help them to that extent the security would be ample real estate & personal added  How would it be regarded by you as proper or improper –

An early answer to me would oblige some of the parties here who desire to push on the improvement of the town – if improper it cant be did of course  Yours truly

Hugh S. Walsh
