This photo was taken from the north side looking south before the collapse of the Melan bridge. Construction on the new bridge began in August 1964 and completed in 1967. The old bridge, which was built in 1898, collapsed on July 2, 1965. The crane was situated on a man made peninsula in the middle of the Kansas River.
