A photograph of Stephen Hurd Smith, who was born in Grantville, Kansas, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Stephen E. Smith. After the death of his wife, Dr. Smith moved his family to Topeka where Stephen graduated from Topeka High School. He began is career working at Hall Lithographing Inc., selling cameras, and later started his own successful business Steve Smith Audio-visuals Inc., Topeka, Kansas. In addition to his audio-visual business, he produced films on fire safety and training that were widely used throughout the United States. Smith married Ruth Royer in 1920 and they had two daughters and one son.
