Geo. W. Martin,

Secty. State Hist. Socty.

Topeka, Kans.

Dear Sir:

Some months ago some little correspondance took place between us of a historical nature in reference to the Moravian Mission and the Chippewa and Munsee or Christian Indians of Franklin Co Kansas amongs which people I was Missionary from 1862-71, and again from 1900 to 1905.  I do not think your Society possesses a description of those Indians hence I send you the accompanying Sketch.

The photo taken at their final payment I would like to send you.  If you cannot get one or get me another copy of Mc

Lain, photographer, at Ottawa I might loan you a copy.  Any copy you get ought to pass through my hands in order that I might number the persons and give their names.

In your report, Kans. Hist. Collection vol IX, 1905-1906, page 568 “2” the Sac and Fox mission should be located in Osage Co. at Quenemo instead of in Franklin co six miles east of the osage and Franklin Co line” and on the Marias des Cygne river instead of “the “Osage.”  Again the Methodist Mission there was founded – begun by R. P. Duvall in the winter of ’63 and ’64 as I know.

Mr. C. R. Green did not come to Franklin Co. until later and therefore did not have the facts at command.

On your map figure “2” designated as the location of the Methodist Mission is more nearly where the Chippewa Mission is located.  The Sacs sold off a six mile strip on the east of their reservation and then moved their Agency to where Quenemo now is and built their mission at that place.

Any further information desired I will cheerfully give you

Yours respectfully

Jos. Romig
