1853 – Sac & Fox Agency Sept 1 –

 

B A James Ind Agt to Col A Cumming Supt of Ind A St Louis Mo

 

Has 3 tribes under his care S & F Ottowas & Chippewus of Swan Creek & Black River

 

Sacs & Foxes numbered last payment 2173 persons, They are a wild roaming race looking principally to [XXXXX] chase with few exceptions – They promise that if they do not sell their land they will [XXXXX] their attention to farming – commence work and live like the whites – Their reservation is 30 miles by 24 west of Cass & Bates Co’s Mo 60 miles to nearest line – The land is only of secondary character [but] well adapted for stock growing –

 

They draw an annuity of $71000 from Gov This is a healthy productive season The Chippeways 30 persons (13 sections)  They get $300 Ottoways 247 persons 74000 acres they & [XXXXX] are a farming class and have raised lots of good crops - $2600 annuity

 

Jotham Meeker gives a good report  They still have to suffer raids from Sac & Foxes & Kanza indians
