A photograph showing a gathering of Anthony, Kansas, citizens to celebrate the driving of the first spike on the Kansas City, Mexico & Orient Railway. In the foreground, standing behind the seated ladies is George Cornell dressed in overalls, he was Orient's first engineer. Seated in front of George is Miss Gertrude Rice, the belle of Anthony, who assisted in driving the first spike. In the center foreground in front of the coal car is the Anthony Military band. To the left of the band are the men with American and Mexican flags who led the procession.
