John H. Kaiser was inducted into the Army (Artillery) in 1942 and served until 1946 in the 265th Field Artillery Battalion. Interviewed by Deborah Pye on September 13, 2007, Kaiser talked about military experiences in the Second World War. He was assigned to several different field artillery battalions with the first being the 422nd. He was selected for Officer Candidate Training and became a 2nd lieutenant. He got married during the war and he and his wife had a child while he was in the service. He was eventually sent to the Pacific theater. Prior to his military service, he was in the Kansas National Guard horse cavalry until 1938. He was born November 3, 1916, in Sioux City, Iowa. His family moved to the Paola, Kansas, area and he graduated from Paola High School in 1934. He attended the University of Kansas. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the community institutions receiving grants.
