A photograph showing the Quaker Shawnee Indian Mission, which was located 1/2 mile east and 1/4 mile south of Merriam, Johnson County, Kansas. The mission building was erected in 1845 and razed in 1917. The three story building measured 24'x70'. The first floor or basement was made of stone and contained the kitchen, dining room, and cellar; the upper stories made of frame had school rooms in each end, dormitories, and four rooms in the middle for the families.
