This photograph from 1897 features the Washburn College baseball team in Topeka, Kansas. Seated on the floor are (l to r): C.W. Stahl - catcher; "Brownie" - mascot; O.B. Irelan (first baseman and team captain); and, Elmer Stricklett - pitcher. Seated behind them are (l to r): Harry Finley - second baseman; Dan Hammatt - shortstop; Lloyd Stahl - left fielder; L.E. Fraser - center fielder; John Harrison - right fielder; Louis Stahl - substitute; Bill Gephart - third baseman; and, Otis Backenstoce - substitute. Standing in the rear is Ed Sample, the team's business manager. Elmer Stricklett, a native of Glasco, later pitched in 104 major league games (1904-1907), primarily for the Brooklyn Superbas. He is most known for his role in popularizing use of the spitball in the major leagues. The photograph was published in the August 10, 1897 issue of the Washburn Weekly Review.
