Norman Bartlett enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served until 1946. Bartlett was born in Colorado on July 26, 1924. He attended school in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. He joined the Navy on January 18, 1943. He went to boot camp in Farragut, Idaho, and then machinists school at Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas. While there, he met his future wife and he returned there after leaving the military. He married her and spent the rest of his life in Lawrence, Kansas. He served on Midway Island. Interviewed by Nancy Porter on Oct 10, 2007, Bartlett talked about military experiences in the Second World War. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the community institutions receiving grants. The transcript of the interview is presented here; the original video copy of the interview is available through the Watkins Community Museum of History (Lawrence) and through the Kansas State Historical Society.
