Wilbur J. Meier enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 and served until 1946. Interviewed by Deborah Pye on Sept. 19, 2007, Meier talked about military experiences in the Second World War. Meier's brother Alfred also served in the Marines. Wilbur was trained as an airplane mechanic in Jacksonville, Florida. He spent most of the time in the Marines on New Caledonia working in the office for a military company that was involved in transporting C-47 cargo planes. He was born in 1921 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He was attending junior college when he enlisted. After his military service, he studied engineering and architecture at Kansas University, using the G. I. Bill. For some time after college, he worked at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, Lawrence, Kansas. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the community institutions receiving grants. The transcript of the interview is presented here; the original video copy of the interview is available through the Watkins Community Museum of History (Lawrence) and through the Kansas State Historical Society.
