This black and white photograph shows the preliminary sketch for the statehouse mural by Regionalist artist John Steuart Curry, (1897-1946). The sketch illustrates an abundance of corn and a sea of water on the Kansas prairie. The proposed artwork was to be commissioned into a mural for the second chapter in the state's history. However, the controversy surrounding Curry's earlier projects "Tragic Prelude" and the "Kansas Pastoral" prevented the sketch from becoming a reality.
