This black and white photograph shows the preliminary sketch on the statehouse mural entitled the "Kansas Pastoral" by Regionalist artist John Steuart Curry, (1897-1946). Located on the south wall on the second-floor of the capitol in Topeka, Kansas, the mural illustrates a Hereford bull with grazing steers and doves in Osage orange trees. In the distance wheat shocks and a grain elevator are depicted as the setting sun and white clouds meet on the prairie's horizon.
