Loren Wiens enlisted in the Navy in 1945 and served until 1946. Interviewed by Marian Poe on Jan 3, 2007, Wiens talked about military experiences in the Second World War. He was born on a farm in Rice County in 1927. He married Phyllis Shardean, also from Rice County, who served in the Navy also. An interview with her is part of this project (item number 213583). The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the community institutions receiving grants. The transcript of the interview is presented here; the original video copy of the interview is available through the Rice County Historical Society (Lyons) and through the Kansas State Historical Society.
