My dear Governor:

Kindly give a little information what is to be done when a local War Committee has requested divine servers with preaching in the German Tongue is to be stoped.  As far as I know the government has not made a rule to this effect.

For manners sake I heeded the request last time I preached at Garden City.  But, my dear Governor, we must also look to the spiritual welfare of our citizens.  Gladly would I always preach in the American tongue, but only a few of my members at Garden City are able to understand the English language.

We know that many of our congregation are looked down upon, why, because we speak German.  And more so, as the Lutheran Church is considered the Kaiser’s Church.  As it happens the Kaiser is no Lutheran and never was.  On the contrary, he has time and again openly opposed our organization.

Why not Americanize the German language as we Americanize the people that have come from Germany?

Again I kindly ask you to give a little enlightenment regarding the above named.  Can a local War Committee enforce this request, although the federal government does not oppose preaching services in the German language.

Thanking you I beg to remain,

Robert Heike, Jr.
