This black and white photograph shows Robert Fred Ellsworth, ( 1926-2011). A lawyer from Lawrence, Kansas who was elected in 1960 to the U.S. House of Representatives from Kansas' second congressional district. Ellsworth represented the second district until 1963 when he sought and won the election to Kansas' third congressional district,1963-1967. In 1966, he attempted a bid for the U.S. Senate but was unsuccessful. After his career in Kansas politics, Ellsworth later served in President Nixon's administration as a special assistant to the president and as Deputy Secretary of Defense. From 1969 to 1971, he served as an ambassador for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
