Louis DeRoin enlisted in the Army (Infantry) in 1938 and served until 1945 in the 134th Infantry Reg; 35th Infantry Div; 127th Field Artillery (Haskell battery), and the 154th Field Artillery. He was sent to California, the Aleutian Islands, and later France where he was serving in the 42nd Rainbow Division. He worked in the quartermasters unit. His unit went through Dachau concentration camp and he described the bodies they found there. He was interviewed by Suzette McCord-Rogers on Dec 8, 2006. He was born on the Iowa reservation near White Cloud, Kansas, on April 19, 1920. He graduated from White Cloud High School in 1938. He joined the National Guard and his unit was mobilized on December 23, 1940. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the nine community institutions that received these grants.
