This is a portrait of Sarah Platt (1798-1877), wife of Jireh Platt, who was an active abolitionist in Mendon, Illinois. Their son Jeremiah Platt came to the Kansas Territory to promote the anti-slavery cause. Jeremiah settled in Wabaunsee County, Kansas, where he was a member of Beecher Bible and Rifle Colony and taught at Kansas State Agricultural College. Jireh's youngest son Luther came to Kansas in 1865 and taught at Lincoln College, Topeka, Kansas. He later became a Congregational minister and served several churches in southeast and western Kansas.
