This is a view across the Wakarusa Bottoms located on the grounds of Haskell Institute (now the Haskell Indian Nations University) in Lawrence, Kansas. When this photograph was taken, sometime during the late 1800s or early 1900s, Haskell Institute provided education and vocational training to Native American students at the elementary and secondary level.
