This undated table lists the distances, in both miles and yards, between key stations on the route from Fort Harker, Kansas, to Denver, Colorado Territory. Fort Harker was located in present day Kanopolis, Kansas. It also lists additional information in the right column, such as whether each branch of the route had an accessible (and healthy) water supply.
Date: Between 1861 and 1876
This chart is appealing visually and can easily be interpreted by 7th graders. It demonstrates the great distance between Ft. Harker and Denver, as well as the conditions along the route. It could be used in the classroom along with a map so students could "connect-the-dots," or it could be paired with documents about this fort and the military's presence on the plains.
