Head Quarters 18th Kansas Cavalry
Fort Harker July 17th 1867-
General Order
No. 1.
The efficiency of every cavalry command depends much upon the condition of its horses. To render this command effective and availably in this particular, it is hereby ordered
1st At Stable call the horses will be fed properly groomed for one hour every commissioned officer of the command being present who is not on duty nor sick
2d At water call the squadron will fall in without saddles under some commissioned officer of the Squadron marched to the Water, and after being watered will be reformed marched back and Picketed
3th At retreat all horses received into the U. S. Service will be brought in, and securely fastened to a picket rope and counted by the 1st Sergt. of the Company who will report the number absent to company commanders
4th No man will be allowed to leave camp mounted without a pass from his company commanders approved at their Head Quarters and it is hereby

made the duty of every officer commissioned and non-commissioned to arrest every enlisted man seen running his horse and report him to this Head Quarters
