This photograph shows the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company's steam powered locomotive, engine #3849, being prepared to undergo the Lidgerwood process of "shaving" driver tires, at the Bakersfield shops, Bakersfield, CA. The Lidgerwood machine, consisting of a steam engine and a system of reduction gears mounted on a car body, can be seen at the rear of the locomotive.
